Mwinyi, who visited India on a four-day official visit from July 17 to 20, held comprehensive bilateral discussions with Vice-President Radhakrishnan. The two leaders assessed the progress of growing trade, investment and development cooperation between the two countries, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
During the meeting, Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi invited Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan to undertake an official visit to Tanzania. The Vice-President accepted the invitation, further reflecting the strengthening diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also held discussions with the visiting Zanzibar President. The talks focused on the India-Tanzania development partnership, with special emphasis on the Indian Institute of Technology Madras Zanzibar campus, which has become a significant educational initiative in Africa.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that Mwinyi expressed appreciation for India’s support in establishing IIT Madras Zanzibar, along with its assistance in Tanzania’s water infrastructure projects and human resource development initiatives.
Earlier during his visit, the Zanzibar President attended the 63rd convocation ceremony of IIT Madras as the chief guest. He also visited the institute’s laboratories, Research Park and Startup Incubation Cell, where he interacted with faculty members and students.
During the visit, Mwinyi unveiled the master plan for the permanent campus of IIT Madras Zanzibar, marking two years since the institution was established in October 2023.
The visit follows Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s state visit to India in October 2023, during which India and Tanzania elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership.
The Ministry of External Affairs said President Mwinyi’s visit provided fresh momentum to India-Tanzania relations and further strengthened cooperation with Zanzibar in economic, technological and educational fields. The engagement highlighted the growing importance of India’s partnership with Tanzania and Zanzibar in advancing shared development goals.
